Faculty of Spatial Development and Infrastructure Systems

Climate change, digitalization and demographic change require structural adjustments and lead to a paradigm shift. The Faculty of Spatial Development and Infrastructure Systems supports this societal transformation in teaching, research and transfer.

This is done through integrated management of natural resources and infrastructure systems in terms of sustainable spatial and location development. The focus is on topics such as energy transition, mobility, water management, measures to adapt to climate change, open space and landscape planning, and digitalization.

The graduates of the youngest faculty of the TH Köln design spatial development strategies and action concepts and accompany their implementation. The aim is to ensure sustainable quality of life, location and environment for the population and the economy, both regionally and internationally – because the challenges are global.

This is also reflected in the Faculty's degree courses: while the Bachelor's degree course in "Spatial Development and Infrastructure Systems" has a strong connection to the areas of structural change in Germany, our Master's programs in the field of natural resource management (also) focus on tropical and subtropical regions. Some of the Master's programs are offered jointly with partners abroad, so that students also have the opportunity to gain insights into other cultural, ecological and social realities.

International Germany Alumni Training Seminar 2023 on the Nexus of Biodiversity and Food Security

In September 2023, the participants of this year's International Germany Alumni Training Seminar at the TH Köln discussed the nexus between biodiversity and food security with a focus on species-rich tropical forests as core areas for sustainable agriculture. The highlight was the participation in the Tropentag 2023 in Berlin.

Research Prize for the “Integrated Land and Water Management” Research Group

The research group “Integrated Land and Water Management”, headed by Prof. Dr. Lars Ribbe, received the research prize of 10,000 euros at the Science Awards Ceremony on Research Day at the TH Cologne. In addition to site-appropriate and sustainable technologies for water resource management in the tropics and subtropics, the subject of the research includes the effects of climate change on the Rhenish mining area and the development of measures to counter these.
