1. Settlements Aswan with over 500,000 inhabitants is the biggest city in the south of Egypt and the Lake Nasser Area belongs to the Aswan governorate.
Today some temples are moved to higher ground but there are hardly any Nubian settlements left.
The only ones seem to be Kalabsha City with a population of about 3,500 pers. (1996) and Garf Hussein (data according to the UNDP – Study).
The other existing settlements are new founded within the developing clusters, as described below. 2. Developing clusters – Karkar and Toshka According to the UNDP - Study there are two developing areas next to Kalabsha.
To figure out the potential of Kalabsha area we have to examine the location factors of the two clusters and find out how they compete with Kalabsha. 3. Existing Transportation
- Main Road
There is only one well paved road in the region; it connects Aswan and Abu Simbel. This road is also of great importance in view of the Toshka development.
- Linking Roads
Linking roads connect the parts of Toshka and Garf Hussein with the main road.
- Tracks
Some not paved, desert tracks exist.
- Boat
There is no proper transportation of products by ship to other cities than Aswan possible.
- Airport
An airport near Aswan and one in Abu Simbel is used mainly by tourists for national flights.
4. Transportation Development
- Main Road
The main connection will be extended to Cairo and the Nile Valley.
- Railway line
Parallel to the main road, a new railway line between Aswan and Abu Simbel will be erected.
Another railway line is planned to meet the new railway track at Karkar and leads to Cairo.
- Linking Roads
The costal track is under construction and to link Kalabsha and East Toshka.
- Boat
The boat lines will be improved but more for tourist purpose than for other transportation.
- Airport
The market access via airport is an important feature and both airports will be improved.
