In the framework of the Master of sience programme „Technologie and ressource management for the tropics and subtropics“ at the University of Applied Sciencees Cologne a pre-study for a forest Monitoring (FM) system for a region in Brasil should be developed. In this Forest Monitoring System important or critical parameters of the Ecosystem should be monitored for the support of the regional sientists, planners and the decision makers.
Within the project the actual standards of forest monitoring should be reviewed and a Metodology for getting a fitting FM-System should be developed, before the Design and GIS-Realisation.

Forest Monitoring (FM) is not only a modern method to get informations about the forrests and ist sourroundings. Especially in Europe and Northern America the monitoring of the forests by collecting and archiving informations about extensions, densities and species in order to controle and protect the „economic“ ressource of the forest has a long history. The changing technological possibilities, but ecpecially the increasing worldwide preassure onto the forest areas in combination by an increasing appreciation of the values of these kind of eco systems leadet to the fact, that the health and vitality of forest ecosystems has become a subject of wide public and political interest since the beginning of the eighties, due to the extensive forest damage, which was first observed sientifically in rural areas in Central Europe.
